Abstract:

Consists Britomar Lathrop's original three "road diaries," written from 1934-1936 when she and her parents were homeless in California during the Great Depression: "The beggars didn't fetch any crowns," an edited typescript of the diaries done in 1940 when the author was 19 years old, under the name Esther Johnson; "Britomar's road diaries: October 1934-April 1936," done in 1999, the author's transcription of her diaries, with additional commentary, copies of photographs and pictures and a resume. Also included are clippings, pamphlet on wild flowers, and a hair clip.

Includes 20 photographs, 4 block-prints and 1 watercolor. Photographs of Britomar as a child and as an adult, of her parents, and of the diaries. The block-prints, created by Britomar for her 1940 manuscript, titled: "Los Angeles river bottom, Japanese produce gardens and Griffith Hills"; "Shelter under a culvert"; "Wind and rain"; ". . . to catch a freight train". Watercolor is of a landscape.

Born Britomar Esther Johnson on Feb. 17, 1921 in New York to Augustave "Ray" [Gammon] Johnson and Helen Slimovitz Johnson. On May 1, 1931, in Los Angeles, after her mother lost her job, the family became homeless. For five years Britomar traveled with her father and mother until she left them in 1935. She completed 7th grade, was admitted as a special student at Los Angeles City College, earning an associate degree. She received a bachelor's degree from UCLA and a PhD. in psychology from University of California, Berkeley in 1954. She worked as a clinical psychologist and also wrote poetry. Lathrop passed away on October 4, 2011, at the age of 90, in Rockford, Illinois.
